Percy Jackson: A Review
Hello! I'm Sloane, and I'm reviewing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. It is the first book in the Percy Jackson series. Many people had recommended this series to me, and I decided to read the first few books a few years ago. I don't know a lot about Greek mythology, but I found these books fun to read. Specifically, I found the first book interesting!
In this mythological fantasy book, Percy begins to be attacked by monsters he didn't even know existed, and no one seems to notice. Until he finds out that he's a demigod: half human and half god. He enters Camp Half-Blood, where the demigods live, and meets new friends and enemies, all while trying to figure out how to fit into his new home. On top of that, he has been assigned a quest to find who stole Zeus's lightning bolt.
There are various interesting aspects to this book. First, the narrative voice is very distinct, as it's from first person, and he seems as if he's just telling this story straight from his thoughts. It makes the story have a natural voice and also a sense of humor, lightening the tone in even tense situations. Another aspect is the chapter titles. When I first opened the book, I noticed the table of contents and was immediately interested by the short descriptions of each chapter. It definitely made me want to read the chapters to find out what happens next! Finally, the overall plot was good. I always like fantasy adventures, and this book definitely has that. I thought it was cool how, throughout Percy's journey with his friends, monsters are disguised based on their mythological history. The layout of the book had many destinations along the way as the friends made their way to the climax.
Overall, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is an entertaining mythological fantasy read, with lots of adventure and humor. I heard it also has a new Disney+ series, which I have yet to watch, but I've heard it's good! I hope you enjoyed my review!
Percy Jackson is one of my favorite book series, and I think you did a good job summarizing the book. What was your favorite scene? Are you planning on reading the rest of the series or the series after this one?
ReplyDeleteHi, while I didn't finish this series, I did read a few books. I agree that the fantasy plot made these book really interesting. Your review on this book is great, and it reminded me of my favorite parts of the series!
ReplyDeleteI love this series! Percy's jokes and snide remarks make me laugh, and I feel his personality is very realistic (and relatable). I agree that the chapter titles are humorous, and they give you a rough idea on what the chapter will be about. I would also recommend reading the Heroes of Olympus and the Trials of Apollo series, also by Rick Riordan!
