From the Desk of Zoe Washington: A Review

Hello! I'm Sloane, and I am reviewing From the Desk of Zoe Washington by Janae Marks. This is an amazing book, and it covers very important topics. The book was so exciting that I read it at any chance I could get.

The beginning of the book takes place on Zoe Washington's twelfth birthday. She had just had her birthday party at bakery, and her dream is to be a baker and be on the Kids Bake Challenge show. Then, on the same day, she receives a letter from Marcus, her father who is in prison. She has never heard from him before. She decides to respond to his letter. After they send letters for a while, he tells her that he did not commit the crime that he was convicted for. Zoe has to find out whether he was wrongly accused, searching for evidence, researching, and working hard to discover the truth, all while also fixing her friendship with her friend Trevor and practicing baking for the Kids Bake Challenge.

I loved reading this book. The writing flows so well and there is a great amount of description, detail, and dialogue in the chapters. The plot, especially the climax, is so exciting and I looked forward to seeing what would happen next. Additionally, the character development and relationships are very well-written, especially Zoe and Trevor's friendship. The book talks about systemic racism and the inequality of the criminal justice system, which are very important topics.

From the Desk of Zoe Washington is a great book with a captivating plot and detailed writing. I would definitely recommend it. I also enjoyed its sequel, On Air with Zoe Washington, where the story continues!

  1. HI SLOANE! I'm really interested in knowing more about the possible false accused crime, and what Zoe does to find evidence to help her father. The plot of this book seems interesting and fun. Especially the Kids Bake Show, because after watching baking shows with my mom, I also used to want to be on them. I liked your blogpost!

  2. You did a good job with the summary of the book. You explained the basic ideas and plot of the book while still leaving questions that make the reader want to read the book. I'm curious why the father hadn't written to her before, and whether she will be successful in her baking competition.
